Slavic massage with a long scarf

A massage is a mutual work and best to be done in pairs. Interaction and interconnection between two people create safe space to explore. Many massage techniques bring the real results on much deeper levels only when you learn to listen to your partner, sensing and responding to the movements of his or her body.
The work with a long scarf is precisely this type of massage. Stretched fabric softens each movement at the same time allows sensing even the smallest impulses within the partner’s body, involuntarily body movements. You can only detect these unconscious body responses if you allow yourself to listen carefully.
Traditional healers use the work with a scarf for a gentle adjustment of the cervical bones of head and neck, especially for readjustment the ring-shape atlas (the first vertebrae). However, these techniques are more advanced, and it is unsafe to learn them on your own. Thus, there are not covered in this course. Nevertheless, you will learn simple, relaxing massage technique with the scarf. It is useful to release muscle tensions, improve blood flow and lymph flow throughout the body, and rejuvenate bodily tissues. Most importantly, it will teach you concentration and balance.
The work with a long scarf will be the first exercise of the Slavic module. You will need either a long no stretch cotton scarf, or a sling, or long rushnyk (a traditional Eastern Slavic cloth used in ritual services). If you do not have any of that, you can use a folded bed sheet, but it is less comfortable to use.

You will need a long linen or cotton scarf or towel. As in the previous practice, you start with tuning into your feelings, your breath and find your sense of balance. To perform the massage with the scarf, you need to stand in a right position and be relaxed as much as possible.

The most common mistake is to bend your back and create tension in your hands. If you do it this way, you will get tired quickly, lose the sensitivity to your massage partner and no one will get the benefit from this practice.
On my seminars, I always draw attention to the fact that if you feel tired from doing the massage; it only means that you are doing something wrong.
The massage with a scarf is a straightforward and comfortable practice to perform if you stand in right position.
Bend your knees. Secure the head of your partner in the scarf or long towel. Make sure that the head does not slide from the scarf or long towel. You can wrap the end of the scarf around your hands to prevent the extra tiredness in your hands. Lengthen your spine opening up through the chest and relax your shoulders. Allow your hands to hang loosely as if they are the extension of the fabric. Now, straighten your legs.
Your back is straight, and you sense your shoulders and your hands. You can effortlessly shift your weight in any direction while staying centred and completely relaxed. Your partner's head hangs on the scarf with enough space between the head and the floor so that it does not touch the floor during the movement. However, the head is not too far away from the ground, so it still feels comfortable for your message partner.
The weight of the human head is approximately six kilograms, but holding it is not heavy if you employ your whole body during the process keeping your back straight and your shoulders relaxed. You allow your entire body to go into fluid motion, gently swaying the partner's head in the scarf. Do so slowly and carefully.

Many clients typically cannot release their head right away, trying to hold the head and not letting go of control, but it is counterproductive for this practice. It might be even helpful to ask partner directly to release the control of the head and allow you to keep the weight of the head in the scarf. Reassure him or her that it is not difficult for you to hold their head and even quite pleasant to do so.
What is beneficial about this type of message?
This type of massage allows releasing the deep tissues tension and the muscles spasms. The issue with tight muscles and pain in the neck is not uncommon. Strenuous training, stress and anxieties of everyday life, illness on the surface of the muscle tissue can cause micro-cracks in muscle fibres. It creates a boost to the whole muscle group. If you do not allow your body to recover after entirely, it will develop into the chronic condition. The muscles will become permanently stiff and tense.
Spastic contraction of muscles (continuous contraction of muscles group causing stiffness and tightness of muscles) can appear after the stroke or intense, stressful episode.
If nothing is done after, it might cause permanent tension in the muscle group and degeneration of muscle tissue. This symptom disrupts the blood circulation. Consequently, for example, muscles tension and stiffness in the neck causes the headaches.
In other areas of the body, it will create painful spasms.

Relaxing massage with the long scarf is the excellent method to release muscles stiffness and spasms. This technique virtually has any contraindications. It recuperates the muscle group and increases the blood flow to the muscles, relieve the painful symptoms and calm the nervous system.

The message is not suitable in the situation if the client is in a state of alcohol intoxication, or with a severe infection in the acute stage, such as flu, for example, but in principle - this is one of the safest massages.

You can work with the head, neck, pelvic area, the legs and feet using the long scarf. It is a delicate and a safe type of bodywork. The massage with the long scarf is even suitable for a pregnant woman and new mothers as a part of after birth recovery.
The primary cause of many diseases of the spine is associated with spasms of deep short lateral and medial transverse muscles in the pelvic area and interstitial muscles. In case if these muscle groups stay in tension for years, it will eventually cause muscle blockages of intervertebral discs, and consequently, the hernia will develop.

You are more likely to overextend the working condition of your muscles if you have a history of an infectious disease, prolonged exposure to the cold for a long time, long static contraction of the muscles caused by long time sitting at the desk with poor posture, carrying a bag on the one shoulder, etc. Over time, the overuse of the muscle group will create the chronic stiffness and muscle spasm in the affected area.

Spastic contraction of muscle blocks the nerve fibres and causes constrictions in blood vessels. Consequently, the reduction of the blood flow and electrical conduction of signals through the nerve to the muscle group as well as to the internal organs that are connected through the blocked blood vessels and nerve fibres. To illustrate that, if the vagus nerve is pinched in the neck area, impulses are no longer pass through this nerve to the liver, and as a result, the client might have a chronic spasm of the gallbladder.

Constricted by spasm muscles create abnormal curvature in the spine. Vertebra discs dislocate and compress, creating tensions in nerves coming from the spinal cord. It might produce the pains in different internal organs connected through those nerves. Pinching in the chest might indicate not the issues with your heart, but with your back and nerves.

The constant tension in the neck decreases the flow towards the eye nerves, which will cause the problems with your vision. In addition, the small nerves affected will reduce the blood flow to the head. The chronic tension causes the blockages of blood vessels as well as a buildup of biochemical waste products in the muscles. The skin covering the muscles becomes sagging and dry. Thus, if you want to continue to have an attractive, youthful face, you need to relax the muscles of your neck.

There is a very long list of different adverse effects that tension in the neck area creates in your body. However, behind all these various ailments is the same general cause. Muscles groups in your upper back and the neck area are no longer capable of relaxing on its own. The constant stiffness and tension in this area cause the pressure on the spinal cord and produces abnormal curvatures to your back.

The earlier we start to work the tension in those areas, the better. There are better chances that the consequences will be less severe.
